Brief Bio

Dr. Yahya R. Kamalipour is professor of mass and international communication, head of the Department of Communication and Creative Arts, and Director of Center for Global Studies, Purdue University Calumet, Hammond, Indiana, USA.  His areas of interest and research include globalization, media impact, international communication, advertising, cultural diversity, stereotyping, Middle East media, and new communication technologies.  Dr. Kamalipour has 11published books, including The Media Globe: Trends in International Mass Media (with L. Artz, 2007); Global Communication, 2nd edition (2006), Bring ‘Em On: Media and Politics in the Iraq War(with L. Artz, 2005); War, Media, and Propaganda: A Global Perspective (with N. Snow, 2004); Globalization and Corporate Media Hegemony (with L. Artz, 2003), Global Communication (2002); Media, Sex, Violence, and Drugs in the Global Village (with K. Rampal, 2001); Religion, Law, and Freedom:  A Global Perspective (with J. Thierstein, 2000); Images of the U.S.  Around the World: A Multicultural Perspective (1999); and Cultural Diversity and the U.S. Media (with T. Carilli, 1998).

In addition to serving on the advisory and editorial boards of several prominent communication journals and professional organizations, Dr. Kamalipour is the founder and managing editor of a groundbreaking digital online publication, Global Media Journal(www.globalmediajournal.com) with 15 editions, including African, American, Arabic, Australian, Canadian, Chinese, Indian, Japanese, Mediterranean, Pakistani, Persian, Polish, Spanish, and Turkish.  He is co-founder and co-editor of Journal of Globalization for the Common Good (www.commongoodjournal.com) and editor of the Global Media Studies Book Series for the State University of New York Press.  He is also founder and president of Global Communication Association.

Dr. Kamalipour has given presentations in Australia, Egypt, Canada, China, Iran, India, Kenya, Mexico, Oman, Slovenia, Turkey, United States, and has been interviewed by numerous newspapers and broadcast media around the world, including BBCReuters,  ABCVOARFL/RL, WBEZ-NPRNileTVTurkish TVIranian TVMetro NetworksDetroit Free PressIndianapolis StarQuill MagazinePhiladelphia Inquire,  The Pittsburgh TribuneThe Times, and other media channels and news agencies.  He has taught courses at universities in Ohio, Illinois, Missouri, Indiana, Iran, and Oxford (England) and his articles have appeared in professional and mainstream publications in the U.S. and and other countries.

Dr. Kamalipour has been profiled in the Contemporary Authors, Who’s Who in the World, and Who’s Who in America.  He has received significant awards, including the James Hartung Award in International Awareness, Northwest Indiana World Trade Council (USA); Distinguished Scholarship Award in International and Intercultural Communication, National Communication Association (USA); Certificate of Recognition, Tsinghua University (China); the Dr. Notghi’s Award in public relations (Iran), and the Edgar Mills Award for Outstanding Service in Communication from the Communicators of Northwest Indiana (USA).

Dr. Kamalipour earned his Ph.D. degree in Communication (Radio-TV-Film) from University of Missouri-Columbia, M.A. degree in Mass Media from University of Wisconsin-Superior, and B.A. degree in Mass Communication (Public Relations) from Minnesota State University.  He has been at Purdue University Calumet since 1986.
